About the project

With the project “The World in Berlin” we aim to celebrate the international diversity in Berlin. The intention is to portrait people born in all the different 200 countries in the world, who are now living in Berlin. We want to tell their story and about their perspective on Berlin. We are a group of nine amateur photographers based in Berlin. You can find information about the photographers and their contact details here.

In the following we want to give you some information about how the participation in the project in the project “The World in Berlin” works.

Step 1: Getting into contact

While we initially could find new participants by approaching people on the street, this has become more and more difficult, as it gets harder to find people born in countries less represented in Berlin. Therefore, we now search actively for participants via student organizations, embassies, restaurants etc. We might approach you directly or via a contact e.g. in a student organization.

At this stage it is important for us to explain the specifics of the project, what we need in terms of photos and interview and what we use the information for. This step ends with your agreement to participate in the project and scheduling the time for the photo shoot and the interview.

Step 2: Taking photos and interview

Here we meet at the agreed location. Often this is outside (especially in times of Corona), but if there is a good opportunity, we do also indoor shootings. Generally, we aim to have interesting locations that reflect Berlin in terms of mood, landmarks or typical scenes. We aim for strong portraits that evoke empathy in viewers and reader of the stories.

We will always comply with the relevant Corona regulations.
